Russian ambassador to Turkey has been assassinated
While giving a speech at an art exhibition in Ankara the capital city of Turkey, Russian ambassador Andrey Karlov has been assassinated by a lone gunman, who reportedly has been killed by Turkish special forces. Based on a video of the assassination (see below) it is clear that the gunman was an Islamist as he shouted their slogan of “Allah Akbar” and declared “We die in Aleppo, you die here.”
It still remains unclear whether the gunman was an ISIL member or a devotee of the other myriad rebel groups operating in Syria, some of which have been routed from Aleppo. Obviously this is a reprisal against Russia for their important role in Assad’s recapture of Aleppo. The only remaining question is what will Putin’s response be. I assume that those responsible for the assassination will be dealt with swiftly and severely.
