What was the secret of Byzantium’s success?
The Byzantine Empire, while having an important role in history, is little known by most people in the West. In short it was the Greek Eastern portion of the Roman Empire that survived the downfall of Rome and lasted for another 1,000 years before it was vanquished by the Ottoman Turks. One may wonder how it was able to survive for so long especially given the fact that, for much of its existence, it was beset by formidable enemies? Well maybe some of the answers can be found in an interesting article by Charles Hugh Smith, in which he proposes 4 factors, the “secret sauce”, that led to Byzantium’s longevity.
